The wild or lowbush blueberry is a small native species that grows on low spreading plants across open ground known as barrens, concentrated in Downeast Maine. It is not planted in the way cultivated highbush blueberries are; growers manage existing wild stands. The berries are smaller, denser in flavor and harvested in late summer, which is why every blueberry festival in our Maine directory falls in August.
