Pulling is a strength competition in which a hitched pair of oxen or draft horses drags a loaded sled or stone drag a set distance, with weight added between rounds until only one team can still move the load. Teams compete within weight classes and the handler, often called a teamster, works the animals by voice and goad rather than reins alone. Ox and horse pulling are among the oldest continuously held events at New England agricultural fairs and usually run in front of the grandstand or in a dedicated pulling ring.
