Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which Standardbreds pull a lightweight two-wheeled cart called a sulky, driven by a seated driver, around a dirt oval. In Maine it is historically tied to the agricultural fair circuit, with race dates rotating between fairgrounds through the summer and fall. Where wagering is offered it is pari-mutuel, meaning bettors wager against each other and the payouts are set by the pool rather than by fixed odds.
