The grandstand is the tiered, usually covered seating structure facing a fairground's racetrack or main arena. It is where spectators watch the events that need an audience on one side and a track on the other: harness racing, pulling contests, demolition derbies and evening entertainment. At many older Maine fairgrounds the grandstand is the largest permanent building on the property, and a fair's schedule is often organized around what is happening in front of it.
